 Footcare Specialist

Podiatrists and orthopedists;
are doctors who diagnose and treat foot injuries and diseases.

Podiatrists:
specialize in medical care of the foot, ankle, and lower leg. A podiatrist must have a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) degree.

Orthopedists:

(also spelled orthopaedists) specialize in problems relating to bone, joints, and muscles. Orthopedists treat problems throughout the body, not just the feet.

After diagnosis has been made, certified pedorthists, pharmacists, footcare nurses, and physical therapists may be involved in treatment

Pedorthists:
should not be confused with podiatrists. Pedorthists use foot devices and footwear to help relieve foot problems. A certified pedorthist (C.Ped.) is a pedorthist who has gone through special training and certification.

Knowledgeable shoe store employees can advise you about appropriate footwear and help fit you properly. But be careful. Shoe store employees who are not properly trained can provide poor advice. Shoe store employees are not qualified to diagnose or treat medical conditions or injuries. In fact, a well-trained retail employee will make a point of stating this if questioned about a foot problem.

Recently, retail foot-comfort centers have become more common. Retail chains such as Foot-Solutions and Eneslow Foot Comfort Centers often employ or are owned by certified pedorthists, Foot-comfort centers offer foot devices and foot-wear designed to maximize foot comfort and foot health.
