The Awareness of Foot care
The awareness and professional care of our feet according to current references was evidenced by bas relief carvings at the entrance of Anhmahors tomb where the work of hands and feet is depicted.
Many Egyptologists believe tending feet, probably spanned the whole of the Egyptian civilization until the the 19th dynasty. The placement of carvings at the entrance of a tomb, typically signified the profession of the buried individual, and the tomb of the physician dates from 2400 years BC.
the awareness continues with Hippocrates of Cos 370-460, BC he is said to have visited Egypt as part of his medical training, and is referred to as the father of medicine in ancient Greece, part of his accolade of credits is the advancement of he systematic study of clinical medicine, included in his medica corpus, was the development of medical instruments, scrapers and scalpels, which are also commonly used in the care of the feet. Aurlus Cornelius Celsus physician and scientist 27 BCE in his renowned work De Medicina, included references to general hygiene, and although he was writing 2000 years ago, most of what he recorded is still pertinent today, in the 7th century, a Byzantine Greek physician known as Paul of Aegina, AD 615-690 compiled a medical compendium consisting of seven volumes, containing notes referring to hygiene and the well being of the general population, these publications remain unrivalled in their accuracy and completeness.(Southgate 1999)
Napoleon Bonaparte 1769 a native of Corsica, employed a personal chiropodist, his troops were known as common foot soldiers, the Kings of France, are similarly recorded as being promoters of personal hygiene, the popularity and need of the awareness of foot care was deemed as part of regular medical care by president Abraham Lincon, who is known to have employed a personal physician named Isachair Zacharie.
He was responsible for the care of the presidents feet, and was further recommended by the president to attend confidential missions with the leaders of the confederacy during the US civil war.(wikipedia 2007)(AJHS2007)
In current times one of the most commonly known outlets providing accessories and footwear, is the Dr. Scholl chain of shops, William Mathias Scholl began his career in Chicago in 1899 in a small store, specializing in comfort and specialist footwear, his concern for painful conditions, motivated him to enroll in medical school to study anatomy and physiology of the feet. Dr. Scholl's life mission was to improve the health and well being of people through foot care.
In 1919 the London foot care hospital and school was established, currently podiatrists and chiropodists worldwide, regardless of educational pathways, continue to treat a wide variety of foot and lower extremity conditions.(Scholl 1968)
